āHartford Courantā Opines on Columbia Mishaps
An in todayās Hartford Courant discusses the ongoing saga at Columbia University surrounding the student-led protest against Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist. According to the Courant, āthis wasnāt an isolated show of intoleranceā at Columbia, a university whose commitments to free speech have recently been called into question by FIREand several members of the media, including the New York Post, The New York Sun, The New York Daily News, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. The Courant editorial uses a favorite FIREaxiom:
Bad ideas are not extinguished by denying their proponents the right of free speech. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. [Emphasis added.]
FIRE is still working for change at Columbia in light of the recent outrages to occur on its campus. As always, stay tuned to The Torch for updates on the state of studentsā rights there.
