Case Overview
Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, students at the University of Louisville made public comments about Kirk鈥檚 death. Members of the public then called on the University of Louisville to punish the students. On September 12, FIREwrote the University of Louisville, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged the University of Louisville to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
